4月22日 The Night That I Danced With A Dutch ManHello Everybody!
There is a little ditty which is sometimes recited in Scotland, it begins with these lines...
"I'll tell you a story, it's no very true" Actually i won't go any further, let's just say it's a nonesense verse really. (i do love nonesense verses)...
ANYhooo!
Me and my Hubby had a really really nice holiday in Skye. One of the highlights (for me) would have to be,
the night that I danced with a Dutchman...would I lie to you?
<ahem>
On Friday night, me and hubby wandered down to the hotel bar, to find out what entertainment was being laid on for the evening. Imagine my JOY when we were greeted with the sight of men bedecked in neckerchiefs, checked shirts and cowboy hats, the women were also cutting it, in similar style. LINE DANCING!!!!! woooohoooo!
I absolutely love line dancing, and a coach load of Dutch people had arrived in Skye and descended on the hotel, for an evening of Line Dancing. Unfortunately a problem arose. Whoever was responsible for the music that night, had no country and western music lined up at all!... After an hour or so, I was dismayed to see almost about half of the party taking off their neckerchiefs and hats in disgust, and they left the bar. The rest of the evening was pleasant enough, if a little quiet. I can't say that my Husband has never danced with me on nights out, he does sometimes, but on this occasion he wanted to sit it out...I was disappointed, my feet were a tapping. Enter...stage left, my mysterious stranger, and asked me if I would like to dance!!!! - WOULD I????? Oh we had fun! I was trying to dance the "Gay Gordons" but he had other ideas, I'm not quite sure what dance we were doing, but it did involve a lot of "twirling!" ![]() LOL
we didn't get a standing ovation or anyfink at the end of it, but I was more than happy with the round of applause!
Another incident of note, happened the following morning, when we arrived in Portree, to do a bit of sight-seeing. After about 5 minutes Me and Drew stopped so that I could remove my fleece (it was soo warm ) we then retraced our steps so that we could put the fleece and other items back in the car. Then I suddenly realised- I didn't have my digital camera on me!!! I had left my camera lying on the ground as i was removing my fleece and i walked away and left it there. So we turned round again, hot-footing it back, it was a good few blocks away. We got there, and there was my camera, still lying on the ground where i had left it! How about That eh?
The weekend flew by so quickly, we were sorry when it was time to leave, I will put up an album of some pictures of the Island, I'm very grateful that I still had my camera. Enjoy the piccies!
mags x 'I'll tell you a story, it's no very true'.... I discovered late on in Friday evening that my dancing partner was not a dutchman he was in fact, a native of Skye. I never found out your name..
(well he was a stranger!)
But I salute you Sir! Thanks for the dance! 4月17日 Speed Bonny BoatThe Skye Boat Song
----------------------------
Speed Bonny Boat like the bird on a wing...
'Onwards' the sailors cry
Carry the lad thats born to be king
Over the sea to Skye Loud the winds howl
Loud the waves roar Thunder claps rend the air Baffled, our foes Stand by the shore Follow they will not dare..... *****
Speed Bonny Boat like the bird on a wing...
'Onwards' the sailors cry
Carry the lad thats born to be king
Over the sea to Skye Hello Everybody!
You learn something new every day...
I always thought that the 'Skye Boat Song' was written by Rabbie Burns, but my friend 'google' informs me that it was composed by one Sir Harold Boulton
I don't know the first thing about Sir Harold Boulton, I'm not even sure if he is Scottish?
Unfortunately I don't have time to investigate right now, as today, me and my hubby are off to...you guessed it! SKYE!
Well these days there is a road bridge to take you over to Skye, very convenient I'm sure, but it doesnt lend the same romantic ring to the journey somehow! lol
I hope that you all have a lovely weekend,
mags x
p.s the ferry in the picture above is actually leaving skye
4月6日 Lost in DundeeHello Everybody,
Me and my hubby are celebrating our silver wedding anniversary, by taking as many mini-break holidays this year as possible
already we have been to fort william, and while staying there we drove up to skye for the day, we enjoyed skye so much we are going back up there in a couple of weeks time. we have also been to dundee, which is my favourite place in all of scotland,(i'm reeealy sorry i didn't tell you katherine, i felt a bit shy about mentioning it,i never even told my spaces sister either, and we passed her home town on the way to dundee.) one of the many many highlights of our trip to dundee was going to visit the ship called 'Discovery' This ship set out in the early 1900's to explore antartica, and the vessel now houses an astonishing museam, which documents all the ship and their crew's voyages, and memorabilia. We were able to explore above decks and below decks, we saw all the private quarters, furnished and also sporting life size maniquin figures of the men who sailed on the ship. if i was to choose which part of the ship i enjoyed seeing the most, i would have to say the engine room where the ship's furnace was housed. this section was mocked up, with 'furnace' blazing and one of the manaquin figures in attendance my dad worked in a shipyard, he was a docker, and one of his duties was to stoke up the ships' furnaces.
when i was very young, not even quite 5 years old, my dad took me to visit the docks where he worked. It's one of my earliest memories, for the reason that when we got to the gates of the shipyard, for some unexplained reason, i took sheer fright, and i could not be persuaded or cajoled in any which way to enter the gates. I have to say, it was quite an imposing sight, a busy place men everywhere, cobblestones, criss crossed over with tram lines as far as the eye could see, and it was all happening behind those gates. My dad had to turn about and take me back home, i was crying my eyes out. when i was older (i can't remember what age) i persuaded my dad to take me back there, and this time i went through those gates, and was able to see everything that was going on. My dad even took me on a ship, and we went below decks to the furnace room, i was instructed to stand at the door and not come any closer, omg those furnaces are ferocious! Anyway the visit to the 'Discovery' sparked another memory, which has lain dormant for many many years, and again involving my dad. The first family holiday that I can recall, was to a scottish island called Arran. We set sail there on a ferry. I can't remember where we sailed from, all i can remember is that we went on this holiday with my mum,but my dad didn't come with us, but he did come to wave us off, and my memory is of him standing without these huge gates, and i was inconsolable as i thought i was never going to see him again. *maybe this was why i had such an adverse re-action to my visit to the docklands with my father eh? I think ive just worked this one out my friends! It was as i was looking at the Dockside Gates, that these memories came flooding back to me, so here i am stood outside them
